I have had the opportunity to work with Nikki Viljoen for a number of years, in my capacity as both Head of Enterprise Development at Standard Bank and CEO of Enterpriseroom.

In both situations, we called on Nikki to support the emerging enterprises we had brought onto our Enterprise Development  programmes. Nikki always worked very well with the enterprises and their owners, and is fastidious about making sure they understand, and properly tackle, the compliance, systems and administrative challenges businesses face.

We have also used Nikki’s training sessions and workshops as they provide useful, concise and practical tools to deal with issues facing start ups and SMMEs.

Importantly, Nikki is reliable and cares a great deal about her work and her clients.

Nikki and I met towards the end of 2008 during a formal network meeting.  We both attended these meetings for our respective businesses and got to know each other during these meetings and individual meetings between ourselves.

Nikki is well known among her peers and the businesses that participate in these network events.  Nikki and her business are respected by the business owners attending these meetings and her professional opinion were often asked and listened to.   Nikki is renowned for her professional service to her clients and most important her very honest manner she communicate to her clients what they need to know and do to make their business compliant.

My interactions with Nikki was not just business but I also got to know her as a friend and met with her socially as well.  Her character trait that truly impressed me is her compassion for people that truly need support in terms of emotional support and frank objective advice.

I consider Nikki a friend, a colleague and someone that will always be honest with anyone but not lose her compassion.  I will and have referred clients to Nikki with confidence and will carry on doing so.

TOURISM ENERPRISE PARTNERSHIP WORKING RELATIONSHIP WITH VILJOEN CONSULTING

The Tourism Enterprise Partnership (TEP) is a 13 year old Non-Profit Company (NPC) that utilises funding from Corporate South Africa and Government to facilitate the growth, development and sustainability of small tourism businesses in South Africa with the aim of Job Creation, Transformation and Sustainability.

Through knowledge gained over a number of years, TEP devised a strategy to improve the way in which we analyse our small tourism business clients. The aim was to thoroughly understand the individual businesses – its strengths, opportunities and weaknesses in order to create an impactful tailor-made development plan.

TEP identified Nikki Viljoen as a business analyst specialist and contracted Viljoen Consulting to assist us with the creation of a Development Needs Analysis (DNA) in 2011. Nikki’s development and alignment of relative questions and delivery, within sometimes unrealistic deadlines, was superb. Nikki not only has incredible knowledge regarding business operations, legalities, finances, etc. but also has excellent intuitive insight into the entrepreneur themselves.

Nikki is obviously passionate about people and business development and her strongest attribute is a no-nonsense attitude. She went above and beyond the contract in ensuring that we have the necessary understanding of how and why to conduct a successful needs analysis. Her guidance and advice has made a definite difference in TEP and her networking skills, and sharing those networks with TEP, is just another example of her dedication and passion.

Insurance: Phil Cooper

Phil CooperPhil Cooper has worked in short term insurance for some 37 years. He spent 18 years working for various Insurers. He then changed to the Broking side of the fence. After eight years in two major broking houses, he chose to leave and set up his own firm. He had one major reason for doing this. He saw that the service levels the large firms give was less generally what is wanted, needed and deserved.

Most clients received “arms length” service. These were the private lines and  small business clients paying less than R200,000 premium per year. Treated like meat in the sausage machine, a letter to renew was enough. Advice never kept up with the changing markets.

He set up Phil Cooper Insurance Brokers 14 years ago. He keeps his promises to clients, and ensures covers offered are cost-effective. Thus, his clients are loyal to him – in fact, he still has most clients he wrote in his first year. They refer friends to him. Nobody on his staff has under 30 years  insurance experience! He spent some years serving on the Board of the Insurance Brokers Council. This body represented some 2,500 brokers across the country. He also served two years as Vice President.

Business Engage: Colleen Larson

colleenColleen Larsen was involved with the South African Women Entrepreneurs Network (SAWEN), an initiative of the Department of Trade & Industry (dti) to support women owned SMMEs.

Colleen became the founder and CEO of Business Engage in November 2005.

The mission of Business Engage is to collaboratively develop individuals and entrepreneurs. Colleen is directly responsible for the provision of products and services which Business Engage offers members and potential members and associates.
